After a lengthy UKAS pilot scheme, and long wait for ISO 42006 to be published to detail the ‘requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of artificial intelligence management systems’, UKAS granted the first ISO 42001 Accreditation to BSI in November 2025 .
Why is ISO 42001 Accreditation Important?
Accredited certification provides a framework that builds trust in the certification process through impartiality and competence of auditors.
Accreditation bodies conduct regular audits of the certification bodies processes and records to ensure integrity is maintained.
This is why supply chains can trust certificates issued by accredited bodies.
However, there is no regulation governing the issuance of ISO 42001 certificates and therefore the buy needs to be ware.
Prior to UKAS Accredited certification bodies being available, some certification bodies conducted audits and issued unaccredited certificates, which is part of the normal route to accreditation.
Assent Risk Management supported one of the first BSI ISO 42001 certificates issued to Darktrace, read the case study.
ISO 42001 Accreditation in other Territories
UKAS was not the first to grant ISO 42001 accreditation globally. ANAB, the North American accreditation body, led the way early on.
At the time of writing (November 2025) nine US certification bodies had been accredited to provide ISO 42001 Certification, including A-LIGN, SGS North America Inc, TUV Rheinland of North America, Inc, Schellman Compliance, LLC.
